International distribution of the Oscars telecast will continue to be handled by Disney Media Distribution through 2020, via a contract extension signed by DMD and the film academy.

The previous pact had been scheduled to expire after the 2014 kudocast. Disney-owned ABC had previously locked up U.S. rights to the Academy Awards through 2020 as well.

"Disney Media Distribution has been successful in securing distribution around the world for the Academy Awards, and we're thrilled to extend this partnership," Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences prexy Tom Sherak said. "The Oscars are an international event beloved by a global audience. It's a testament to the magic of Hollywood."

The most recent Oscars were seen in more than 225 territories internationally, via traditional broadcast, VOD and online streaming.

"We are excited to be able to extend our agreement to deliver the world's biggest celebration of entertainment to audiences around the globe," said Disney/ABC Television Group prexy Anne Sweeney. "We look forward to building on the foundation of our relationship with the Academy, and working together to reach new audiences on new platforms in the years ahead."
